Several states fund public high schools for students, typically in grades 11 and 12, who are advanced in math and science and sometimes the humanities, as well. In many cases, the entire cost of tuition and boarding is covered by the state. In several states the academy is located on a college campus, permitting students access to college courses, faculty, and research facilities. Generally, admission is selective and based upon previous academic records, personal interviews, teacher recommendations, and standardized testing.
