Global Awareness Annemarie Roeper Award

The Global Awareness Annemarie Roeper Award recognizes an individual, organization or institution whose work aligns with that of Annemarie Roeper by advocating for gifted children to develop a strong sense of self, promoting positive social action and strategies for gifted individuals to understand the perspectives of others, providing opportunities for global interdependence and diversity, facilitating peacemaking, fostering the care of the Earth and addressing the profound insights into the multifaceted inner world of gifted children and the understanding of the need to foster global awareness to reflect the unique perspectives of gifted children and to respond to their inherent concerns about the future world they live in.

Individual: James Delisle

I've been working with gifted children and teens and those who work on their behalf for more than 4 decades. Most of my work has centered on understanding and appreciating the social and emotional aspects of giftedness, both at home and in school settings. I have long believed that giftedness is "someone you are" not "something you do", a lesson I learned well from Annemarie Roeper, who I refer to lovingly as my "gifted grandmother." I spent 25 years as a professor of education at Kent State University and, during most of that tenure, I taught gifted middle school students one day each week.

Though officially retired since 2008, I continue to teach gifted 9th graders monthly at Scholars Academy in Conway, South Carolina. I'm the author of 21 books, including two 2018 releases: Doing poorly on purpose: Strategies to reverse underachievement and respect student dignity (ASCD/Free Spirit) and Understanding your gifted child from the inside-out: A guide to the social and emotional lives of gifted kids (Prufrock). Too, I've been involved with the NAGC Global Awareness Network since its inception.

Organization: Level Up Village

A social impact company based in Old Greenwich, Conn., Level Up Village (LUV) delivers pioneering Global STEAM (STEM + Arts) enrichment courses that promote design thinking and one-to-one collaboration on real-world problems between students from around the world. Through communication and collaboration between students from different perspectives globally, LUV classes encourage peer-to-peer learning, a strong sense of self and global awareness. Launched in 2012, LUV has run courses during school, after-school and in the summer with more than 40,000 students at more than 400 U.S. schools and learning centers, with 90+ Global Partner organizations in more than 20 countries. Level Up Village is a P21 member, was the first to receive the ISTE Seal of Alignment at the Proficiency Level for the 2016 ISTE Standards for Students and was the EdTech Digest winner in the Cool Tools Category for 21st-Century Skills.
