The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) today announced Ophelie Allyssa Desmet and Nielsen Pereira will receive the 2018 NAGC Hollingworth Award at the NAGC 65th Annual Convention in Minneapolis, MN, November 15-18, 2018.

The award, named for Leta Stetter Hollingworth (1886 - 1939), encourages educational and psychological research studies of potential benefit to gifted and talented children. Long associated with Teachers College of Columbia University, Dr. Hollingworth's many significant works include Gifted Children: Their Nature and Nuture, Children Above 180 I.Q., and Stanford-Binet: Origin and Development.

Ms. Desmet is a doctoral fellow enrolled in Gifted, Creative, and Talented Studies at Purdue University, and Dr. Pereira is an assistant professor in the same program. Their study, How Gifted Underachievement Develops According to Gifted Underachievers and their Parents, will explore how underachievement develops among gifted students and how those students experience their underachievement.

“The NAGC awards program shines a light on those who are making a difference in supporting gifted children as they reach to achieve their personal best,” said M. René Islas, NAGC Executive Director “Ms. Desmet and Dr. Pereira’s study will gather invaluable important insights for understanding why some gifted students underachieve.”
