NAGC Joins the New Mexico Association for the Gifted in Supporting Vital Equity Legislation
Bill Reduces Excellence Gaps and Proposes Universal Screening and Monitoring Provisions

WASHINGTON, District of Columbia (March 5, 2021) – The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) recently joined the New Mexico Association for the Gifted (NMAG) in calling for legislative leaders in Santa Fe to pass vital new equity legislation to support all of New Mexico’s gifted and talented students.

In a recent letter, NAGC’s President Jonathan A. Plucker, Ph.D., and Executive Director John Segota, MPS, CAE, stated, “All school districts should support efforts to ensure equity and excellence in the service of reducing excellence gaps across the state. The provisions of House Bill (HB) 130 that outline standards for equity and excellence in gifted education are a welcome step in the right direction. In particular, the provisions on universal screening and monitoring would make New Mexico a national leader in the education of our country’s brightest students.” NAGC’s President Dr. Plucker has also personally testified on behalf of this legislation.

Many of the bill’s provisions require no new funding or, in the case of academic acceleration, could potentially lower education costs over the long term, all while investing in the economic and cultural development of New Mexico and its children.

NMAG President Chris Vian highlighted, "NAGC and NMAG believe that equity in gifted education is an imperative that we all must strive for. HB130 provides an amazing opportunity for New Mexico to lead the nation in ensuring the promise of equity for each and every one of our gifted and talented students."
